I just wondered that there have been numerous artists who have recorded this song from Sarah Brightman to Katherine Jenkins. Even Mary Jess sang this song on the Chinese version of X Factor. What is your favourite version?
Numerous is an understatement. I, alone, have over 30 versions. Anyone that knows me relatively well has read my rant about this song probably more than once. So I won't repeat it.
I no longer like this song and won't listen to it by anyone, but it is THE song that got me into classical crossover about 12 years ago, and it used to be my favourite song of all time.
Before it was covered to death, I listened to, and loved, Sarah Brightman's version. I can tolerate Kanon's version, but that's only if it's come on by itself. I would never select to listen to this song.
I have not heard Mary Jess sing this but I like the Katherine Jenkins version. Like you Nicola this song got me into classical music too. I still love it but agree it has be covered to death now and well done to Mary Jess for not being tempted to record this on her debut album. She is the shepherd and not a sheep.
Bob, if you have a look at the video I posted HERE you can see a very small snippet of Mary-Jess singing Time to Say Goodbye on I Want to Sing to the Stars. I am yet to find a video of the full performance.
I probably have more versions of Time To Say Goodbye in my playlist than any other song, I have even deleted some of them, but the song was also an influence on me at the time when I discovered the genre when I saw a video on YouTube of Katherine Jenkins performing it live so if I had to I would probably choose her version.
