Katie has already been mentioned a few times in this forum, so I thought I would start a thread for her.
The world of pop music generally passes me by with little impact on my life. Just occasionally however, a song will impinge itself on my consciousness and make me take notice. 'Closest Thing to Crazy' was one such song, but back then I wasn't in the habit of buying music. I haven't followed Katie's career closely since then but whenever I heard her name it aroused a mild interest in me.
For a number of years I have taken part in the BBC Songs of Praise 'Big Sing' at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the audience choir. We have one rehearsal the previous weekend and another on the Sunday afternoon before the recording in the evening. When the conductor announced the guest artists at the end of the first rehearsal last September, he didn't seem to know much about Katie Melua, but there was a general murmur from the choir as at least some of us knew the name.
Towards the end of the Sunday afternoon rehearsal, a young woman wandered on to the stage and the conductor said "Oh hello, are you Katie?", to which the reply was a simple "Yes". The choir were dismissed for our tea break and as we were getting up from our seats, Katie started to sing. I just had to sit down again and listen through to the end, her voice was so smooth and captivating.
For the actual recording, Katie did a brief interview with Aled Jones before singing 'Gold in Them Hills' which was one of the highlights of the evening for me. So here is the performance that turned me into a real Katie Melua fan.
Since then I have bought a number of Katie's albums and I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of 'Secret Symphony' next week.
