I discovered this artist from Nicola's classical crossover site and was drawn to the fact that she had a resemblance to Kate Bush (for those that remember Kate Bush). I then ordered her CD from her web site after giving a small donation and Mariette signed the CD and sent it to me in Australia.
After getting the CD in the post I have to agree with Nicola that her voice is a bit like Kate Bush and she can certainly hit those high notes. My favourite tracks are 'Circles of Change, You are Holy, Images Lie and Risk it'. It is now one of my most played CDs along with Mary Jess' Shine and Margaret Keys' Legato.
She is very highly rated for vocal talent and creativity on Nicola's Classical Crossover web site.
I expect she is relatively unknown amongst Forum members and very much underrated but Mariette is a lovely person who also engages with the fans on Twitter and also is starting to gather a huge following in Spain. I have taken the following bio from her web site for your information.
Mariette Davina’s Biography:
An inspirational singer and composer with a Classical Edge aptly describes Mariette Davina’s musical style. 2011 has been a successful year for Mariette with the release of her first UK Indie album to rave reviews. With Best Newcomer and Best Indie Artist nominations from both the LTTM awards and Classical Crossover, Mariette has also been listed on Classical Crossover’s all time top 20 Artists.
Her album represents something new in the music industry, with her classical roots, and encouraging lyrics strongly coming through the mass of orchestral string arrangements and haunting melodies. Her music video for the single ‘You Are Holy’ has been listed for broadcast on major Television Networks in the UK such as Revelation TV and GOD TV.
The single is already proving to be very popular in Latin America, and plans are underway to shoot the next music videos for the faster paced ‘Circles of Change’ and ‘Risk It’ tracks.
Born in the United Kingdom, and having moved to South Africa at an early age, Mariette’s dream was to become an opera singer. After many years of vocal training Mariette obtained her Music Degree specialising in Performance Opera at the University of South Africa and was awarded two bursaries to do her Honors Degree in Music at the University of Pretoria.
During her Honors year Mariette started writing her own unique, original music. Undeterred by the fact that she failed composition at University, with her lecturer telling her she would never be able to write anything worthwhile, Mariette landed a record deal.
Her album of mostly her own original music was released by Gallo Records Africa, and nominated for Best Classical album in South Africa., amidst numerous television appearances.
Mariette then moved back to the UK, where she attended three years of Bible school. Here she developed a love for worship music and gained experience in leading worship, simultaneously discovering her gift for spontaneous worship. She recorded a 10 track album of original songs at ICC studios comprising of a culmination of her musical influences thus far. It was produced by Neil Costello in Eastbourne UK, with strings supplied by members of the London Philharmonic orchestra.
In an industry where there is so much musical similarity and repetition, Mariette is not afraid to do things differently and remain faithful to her own personal style. The result is an artist and composer who is quickly gaining international recognition for her fresh, innovative approach.
